About NCEdCloud IAM Service

Identity and Access Management (IAM) is one of the NCEdCloud initiatives for the K-12 community of North Carolina. The service will provide LEAs and Charter Schools a tool to manage the authentication and authorization needs for their students, employees, parents, and guests. It provides self service capabilities to all end users and delegation capabilities to all LEA/Charter administrators. The actual service is being provided by Identity Automation and the IAM infrastructure will be hosted in Amazon's AWS environment. This service provides unlimited scaling as well as a world class high availability platform.

Purpose

The purpose of NCEdCloud IAM Service is to address the three main challenges the K-12 community currently faces regarding Identity Management:

  • K-12 users have too many accounts to manage for their learning resources
  • Managing account information for K-12 users is mostly a manual process
  • Increasing number of cloud-based education resources require a solid identity management foundation
